Our Classrooms

Our classrooms are the perfect balance of playful and peaceful, with natural light and calm colors.  Each classroom provides a wide variety of play and learning opportunities. Our students come to see the classroom as a second home where they feel welcome, safe, and free to explore.

Our main preschool area houses our Toddlers, 2s and 3s classrooms, as well as our Studio, Rain Room, Director's Office and S.T.E.A.M. Lab.

Our newest classroom spaces are located on the second floor of the church and are home to our 3s, 4s and J/K classes as well as an Art Studio and Literacy Lab.

Every classroom features a library for reading, building zones, and areas dedicated to dramatic play and creative expression.  Each classroom also is home to a sensory bin that encourages scooping, pouring and sifting to help balance sensory needs.  Restrooms are located in the classroom for our 2s students, and adjacent to our classrooms for 3s and 4s and J/K students.

Our teachers access a wide variety of educational materials from which they can choose as they plan their lessons.  Items are rotated regularly to promote children's interest and to encourage differentiated learning opportunities.  Research in brain development draws connections between an environment and children's sensory needs.  Materials are placed intentionally so students can experience a chance for solo play, as well as opportunities for collaborative play.

Our Days Together

From morning meeting to a good-bye song, your child's day will be filled with creativity, learning, and love.  Arrival time through centers time, snack time, enrichment activities and playground time, your child will be constantly engaged in their day. Daily routines help children become more independent with each passing year.

Arrival

Using whatever arrival method you've chosen, carpool or walk-in, students will be greeted by a teacher as they are walked into school and to their classroom.  Children will hang up their bags and wash their hands before beginning their day.  While some classes sign-in using a "question of the day," others encourage handwriting practice through a traditional sign in.  Regardless the method, children are welcomed back each day with a smile and a familiar routine.

Morning Centers Time

Children choose from a variety of centers activities, including arts, writing, blocks, reading, science, fine-motor skills, sensory play, dramatic play, housekeeping, listening center, puzzles, and more.  Teachers also use this time to work with children individually and in small groups.

Circle Time

During Circle Time, teachers lead the children in songs, rhymes, literacy activities, math games, and reading aloud of classic and modern children’s literature, as well as Calendar and reviewing the day's schedule.  Children are actively involved in their learning, taking turns moving felt board characters for a story, “jumping” the number of days in the month, graphing a favorite flavor of ice cream, or telling friends about a special object brought for show and tell.

Snack Time

Our preschoolers need constant fuel to feed their small but active and growing bodies. Snack time, half-way through our day, is a staple for their routine. When thinking about snacks to pack, make sure to pack foods that will keep their tummies full until lunchtime.

Weekly Enrichment

Along with a regular daily schedule, children enjoy a variety of resources that supplement their learning.  As a highlight each week, all classes explore music & movement as well as physical education sessions to help get those wiggles out. Our 3s and 4s classes enjoy Chapel every 2 weeks, led by Reverend Ben, as well as social & emotional lessons led by our guidance counselor.  Our J/K students receive weekly art lessons from our Director, Mrs. Taylor, a National Board Certified Teacher of Art.

Small Groups Time

Group time will vary from day-to-day and size; this time might include an art project, a science experiment, a dramatic re-enactment of a story, a cooking project, a gardening project, and so much more.  Our teachers love to share high quality children's literature with their classes, and these works are often the springboard for the whole group lesson.

Outdoor Play

We use our outdoor campus as much as possible. This dedicated outdoor play time will often take place on our large, shaded playground, but classes also participate in parachute games, relay races, obstacle courses, or choose to take a nature hike or play in our Outdoor Classroom.  In inclement weather, children engage in active play in the Rain Room, our indoor play space.

Our Campus

So much of our learning takes place outside of our classroom walls!  From our newly renovated, shaded playground, the courtyard, our hiking trails, to our neighboring pond; our teachers love to bring our lessons outside and take advantage of all that the All Saints Episcopal Church campus has to offer.

Playground

Renovated just this year, our spacious playground offers play structures for both our oldest and youngest students.  There is  plenty of space for children to run, explore, jump and swing.  The choice of natural materials for our playground is intentional; children love to look for worms in mud puddles and collect rocks, pine cones, and needles to put in our kitchen buckets and wagons.  Our playground is the place where kids connect with nature, build gross-motor skills, fine-motor skills and their imagination all at once!

Woods & Trails

Beyond the playground you will find marked hiking trails that culminate at Roslyn, the Retreat Center of the Episcopal Church located next door to All Saints.  Our youngest students love to take short “hikes” in the woods to look for leaves, birds, trees and all things nature!  As our students grow, they are able to walk a bit further and venture to the most magical spot…the pond!  The chance to take a mini-field trip on our own campus is our favorite adventure!

S.T.E.A.M. Lab

An additional outdoor learning space on our campus, our S.T.E.A.M. Lab is the portico area and doubles as our preschool's main entrance. This space was transformed to allow classes to build, paint, experiment, and explore in an outdoor setting.  The space creates an environment that allows additional creativity in building and working with their classmates to achieve a singular goal.

Oversized outdoor blocks find their home in our S.T.E.A.M. Lab. Combined with collected items such as large cardboard tubes or gutters, children can problem solve by building ramps and roads in this larger exploration space.  here are always weeks where the rain seems to never end, and that is when the S.T.E.A.M. Lab is a lifesaver! Students can still get fresh air and a chance to explore when the rainy days won't go away!

Research shows that vertical mark making is a useful tool in promoting eye hand coordination, bilateral stability and encouraging focus and attention.  We love the making opportunities provided in the S.T.E.A.M. lab.  Students can create at our oversized chalk board or on our plexiglass wall mounted easels. The chalk board is the perfect backdrop for our mini corner stage; a wonderful setting for story retellings and puppet shows.

Studio

The Studio is a wonderful space for creative expression. The space has been curated to include long tables for messy class projects and lunchtime gatherings. It provides a home for music classes, lots of dramatic playtime, and an additional space to help our students get their wiggles out.  This bright and beautiful room offers tons of light and space with extra large tables to play host to cooking and painting projects throughout the year, with easy access to cleanup in our kitchen nextdoor. Our Studio space is the perfect solution to let our students spread out and express their creativity!

By providing dramatic play supplies and scenarios, we set the stage for so much more than dress up.  We support children as they navigate problem solving and turn taking.  Students will build vocabulary and conversational  skills as they narrate situations.  Self expression, creativity and risk taking are also reasons we love to encourage dramatic play in our studio area.  Teachers rotate through a number of supply kits in this room, from veterinary clinics and pizza parlors to circuses and cupcake shops!

The Studio is also home to our Lunch & Learn program. Students participating in this program use this space as an additional classroom, with space along the classroom walls for the tote-bags, ample table space for eating lunch, a large chalk board for impromptu creativity, and additional space and materials for imaginative play and structured learning.

Church & Chapel

All Saints Preschool is a ministry of All Saints Episcopal Church.  Founded in 1963, its strong ties to the church have helped the school grow and thrive through the years.  Members of the church serve on the Preschool Board and help guide decision making about the best interests of the school. We are blessed to share the beautiful All Saints campus with the church and are happy to have a home here.

Our 3s and 4s classes visit the Narthex every other week for a Chapel lesson.  Led by Reverend Ben or other church leaders, Chapel consists of child-friendly Bible stories and songs. Classes sit on the floor and eagerly share their ideas and make connections with what they have learned. One of the most exciting parts of Chapel is the selection of a candle helper...there is no greater honor on a Chapel day!

Although all are welcome at All Saints Church, membership is not a requirement to attend the Preschool.  If you have a faith home elsewhere, you are still always welcome to attend special events at All Saints Church such as the Oyster Roast, Advent Celebration, Christmas Pageant, or Easter Egg Hunt. If you would like more information on joining the church, you can reach out to Winston Hazlegrove, Parish Administrator at  whazlegrove@allsaintsrichmond.org

Each summer, All Saints Church offers a Vacation Bible School session.  This experience is widely attended by preschool families and is a wonderful way to connect the preschool setting to an early church experience.  Look for registration opportunities in April each year for this special week.

Rain Room

Children need to wiggle and move, and a rainy day won't stop them! Our indoor play space, the Rain Room, is a great option to encourage movement when the playground is too soggy an option.  Climbing structures, scooters, hula hoops, and bouncing balls encourage gross motor development on even the wettest day.

6P0A9272.jpg
6P0A9258.JPG

Our Rain Room includes our unique climbing structure. The wooden play structure is a safe option for even our tiniest risk takers.  For those who need a quiet spot, the cozy nooks below the slide are a perfect place to turn into reading cubbies. The space also includes y-bikes and cars for riding around, turn taking and sharing are key when deciding who gets to drive first!  Our teachers coach children on how to problem solve themselves when challenges like these arise.

Building eye-hand coordination and crossing the midline are important gross motor skills that impact a child's entire development.  Providing opportunities to play catch and throwing in this mini-environment builds confidence you'll see later on the basketball court!
